Mauritius - Pakistan Bilateral Relations

Mauritius-Pakistan relationship has been based on shared culture, tradition, language and religion. However, during the past few years there has been a boost in our relations especially on the trade front.

Education

Under the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme (PTAP), the following seats are allocated to Mauritius on an annual basis:

Urdu House

Pakistan is examining the modalities of the funding of the construction of the proposed Urdu House in Mauritius.

Visits of Pakistani Eye Surgeons (Dr. Wajid Ali Khan and Team)

Dr. Wajid Ali Khan and his team of eye surgeons from the Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, have been visiting Mauritius annually since August 2008 to carry out eye surgery including corneal transplants on Mauritian patients at the Moka Eye Hospital.

Twinning between Port Louis and Karachi

An agreement for the twinning of the city of Port Louis and Karachi was signed on 30 April 2007 in Karachi.

Foreign Office Consultation

A Memorandum of Understanding between Mauritius and Pakistan on bilateral consultations was signed in October 2004, and consultation exercises are carried out periodically.

Economic Cooperation Partnership & Trade Agreement

A Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between Mauritius and Pakistan was signed in July 2007 in Mauritius, during the 6th round. The Mauritius-Pakistan Joint Working Group are now envisaging negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Mauritius and Pakistan.

The following MoUs/Agreements were also signed:

• Agreement on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters

• MoU on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Matters

• MoU between the Mauritius Standards Bureau and the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority

• MoU between SEHDA (Mauritius) and SMEDA (Pakistan)

• MoU between the State Trading Corporation and the Trading Corporation of Pakistan

• MoU between Enterprise Mauritius and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan

• MoU on Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Mauritius and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the years 2011-2014

Air Services Agreement

A Bilateral Air Services Agreement was signed between Mauritius and Pakistan in November 1979 and an MoU signed in 1999.

At present there is no direct flight between Mauritius and any point in Pakistan.

DTA’s & IPPA’s

A Double Taxation Agreement (DTA) between Mauritius and Pakistan was signed in September 1994, and an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) in April 1997.
