The Mission was opened as a Consulate General in 1992 and was subsequently upgraded to a High Commission following the post- apartheid democratic dispensation in South Africa in 1994

The thrust of the work of the Mission is anchored on government's foreign policy priorities as enunciated in the Government Programme and key priorities set in the National Budgets. The following are the overarching priorities:

(i) Strengthening and maintenance of Bilateral Relations with the Republic of South Africa and countries of accreditation.

(ii) Use of current and planned structured bilateral engagements to strengthen and expand cooperation in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres.

(iii) Strong engagement of Mauritius in SADC and pursuit of the national interests of Mauritius through active participation in SADC and other regional fora e.g NEPAD, the Heads of Mission Meetings of the IOR-ARC in Pretoria, New Asia- Africa Strategic Partnership and the Pan-African Parliament including the other regional bodies such as COMESA.

(iv) Pursuit of vibrant economic diplomacy initiatives for the promotion of Mauritius' trade, investment and tourism potential and opportunities.

(v) Effective Consular assistance to the Mauritian community in South Africa.
